Spot On - The Pelican

"The Pelican" by Dixon Lanier Merritt:

" A wonderful bird is the pelican,
His bill will hold more than his belican.
He can take in his beak Enough food for a week,
But I'm damned if I see how the helican."

Birds of London

There's something truly magical about the way nature weaves its stories into the fabric of a city. For centuries, London's lush green spaces and historic buildings have been home to a myriad of bird species, each with its own unique tale to tell. Our 'Birds of London' journal series is a tribute to these avian residents, and it all begins with a remarkable character: the pelican.

The History of the St James's Park Pelicans

In the heart of London, at St James's Park, a group of noble, long-standing residents have made it their home for almost four centuries. The pelicans of St James's Park are more than just birds; they are a living piece of London's history.

The story begins in 1664 when the Russian Ambassador presented these magnificent creatures as a gift to King Charles II. As a symbol of diplomacy and friendship, these pelicans were released into the park's waters, becoming an enduring emblem of peace and camaraderie.

Our first journal in the 'Birds of London' series, 'The Pelican Journal,' is a tribute to these historic birds. Its pages offer a blank canvas for your thoughts, ideas, and reflections. Just like the pelicans' presence in St James's Park, this journal is a timeless companion, ready to capture your own stories.

We look forward to hearing about your experiences, your photos, and your stories about London's birds. Whether it's a chance encounter with a charming pigeon or a mesmerizing moment with a mute swan on the Thames we'd love to hear them.
