Spot On - The Lloyd's building

Spot On - The Lloyd's building

There are a multitude of wonderful buildings of various styles and periods in London, making it virtually impossible to select a favourite. The incredible Lloyds Building is however, in my opinion, one of the most exciting of buildings in the city.

This building is truly an absolute marvel. On a recent visit, standing at the foot of this towering structure in Lime street, I couldn't help once again being in awe of this incredible steel sculpture of a building.

Designed by the talented architect Richard Rogers, it is a true testament of contemporary architecture designed to excel in the test of time. The internationally renowned building took eight years to build and was opened by Her Majesty, The Queen, in 1986. 33,510 cubic meters of concrete, 30,000 square metres of stainless-steel cladding and 12,000 square metres of glass were used during the construction.

This unique and unconventional building challenges the norms of traditional architecture with its "inside-out" concept and exposed structural steel skeleton. Service elements like elevators and staircases are placed on the outside, thereby maximising the interior space.

The Lloyds Building is a prime example of how good architecture can transform an urban landscape and have a profound impact on not only its surroundings, but the inhabitants that use it daily.

I highly recommend checking out this masterpiece and then heading over to the lively Leadenhall Market for a treat and to catch your breath!
